Early Morning Picking

For some reason, I ended up waking up really early this morning and couldn’t go back to bed. So I decided to get an early start on the garden and picked a basketful of random things:

Radicchio, oregano, cherry tomatoes, basil, alpine strawberries, edamame, zucchini

Most of the harvest are repeats from the past weeks but I did get a small handful of edamame from my sad burnt plants, which are not doing well. I feel bad for the edamame plants but it didn’t stop me from taking off its pods and eating them. Mmm. The pick of the week though, is the radicchio, which has beautiful streaks of purple and red through its green leaves. This is the first harvest of radicchio. I like how pretty they are and how bug-proof they’ve been so far. We’ll see if they can go the whole season without being nibbled on.

After an hour and a half of wandering and weeding, I decided to make breakfast with a small salad from the garden to go along with my bagel and lox and coffee. I had the house to myself so I dragged the small patio table and chair under the shade of the tree and read the newspaper and ate my breakfast with a view of the garden. Not a bad way to wake up.
